FUNDRAISING SUCCESS FOR 2011 HELDERBERG WINE FESTIVAL

Thousands of wine lovers, families, friends and tourists enjoyed the 4th Helderberg Wine Festival, which took place on 34 wineries from 20-23 October and raised nearly R57 000 for Somerset West Round Table to use for various charitable activities in the region.

At the handover of the big cheque, main sponsor Theo Espost of Kwikspar Fine Food & Wine Stellenbosch and Somerset West said that the excellent co-operation between wineries, sponsors, media and charities proved his belief that “Local is Lekker”, which is also the theme of his ongoing community involvement programme.

“As always it’s the fundraising angle which makes this festival different,” says organisor Cobie van Oort. “Although 2011 was a tough year financially, we managed to keep attendance steady and did a lot with a small budget, mostly due to incredible support from loyal media partners and sponsors.”

After the festival, participating wineries, sponsors and organisors put their heads together to plan for the 2012 event, which will take place a little bit later in the year from Thursday, 15/11 to Sunday, 18/11 to ensure warmer weather and enable participating wineries to offer more outdoor-based activities in keeping with this “start of summer” festival.

Festival passes will cost R80 for early bird buyers and R100 during the festival and will again be valid for all 4 days – which makes it one of the better “value for money” options in the winelands.
